locally advanced tumors: Accounts for 65 percent of pancreatic cancer cases. Most often, surgery is no longer an option so, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are offered. Survival times are about six to 10 months following diagnosis.

metastasis: The spread of cancer cells from the original site to other parts of the body.

metastasis stage: Occurs when pancreatic cancer is malignant; is usually fatal within three to six months. Palliative care is offered to help ease patient discomfort.

neoplasm: An abnormal growth of tissue, it is another word for tumor.

malignant adenocarcinomas: Common pancreatic cysts, they account for 95 percent of all cases of pancreatic cancer.

mucinous cystic tumor: Usually benign but often surgically removed even if biopsy shows it is malignant. Affects women more often than men.

mucous ductal ectasia: Slow-growing tumor that originates in the lining of pancreatic ducts, produces excessive amounts of mucus, and often results in chronic pancreatitis. Men over age 60 and smokers are at highest risk.

neuroendocrine tumor: Originates in the islet cells, which are responsible for the production of hormones.

non-functioning islet cell tumors: Occurs when islet cells stop producing hormones, resulting in tissue growing very large. Non-functioning islet cell tumors are less aggressive than adenocarcinomas with a lower risk of metastasis at time of diagnosis.
